Football
“Football isn’t a matter of life or death, it’s a lot more serious than that” – Bill Shankly Football, or Soccer to differentiate it from American gridiron, is the world’s most popular participation and audience sport. It is played in every country in every park and on every street by men, women and children of all ages. The popularity of the game and support for teams at a national and team level is fanatical, and to date, two wars can be directly or indirectly attributed to football matches.
The game is an excellent form of exercise, and for many adults it is a welcome escape from the daily routine and a fanastic aerobic and cardio-vascular workout. Football teams and games can be sourced for all ages and levels. Football exercises all the major muscle groups, as well as teaching life lessons in team- building and team- work. A walk through any park on a Saturday or Sunday will illustrate the popularity of the game as a participation sport. For the elder generation, once the days of the outdoor 11-aside are over, many graduate to indoor 5-aside games and these serve as an effective workout as well as a form of socialising.

Who’s the greatest?
Although the game was invented by the English, they have long since relinquished their dominance of the game at a national level, although the English Premier League is regarded as being one of the highest standard leagues in the world. After years of let-down, Spain are the current European and World Champions, and the Spanish “La Liga” is also particulalrly strong. The South Americans, particulalrly Brazil and Argentina also have perenially strong international teams.
As regards who is or was the world’s greatest ever player, this argument has raged for years, and is a totally subjective one. But it can perhaps be best summed up by the following phrase:
Maradona good
Pele better
George Best !!
