What is Pilates?

A good definition of Pilates is that it combines an educational and exercise approach using the proper body mechanics, movements, truncal and pelvic stabilization, coordinated breathing, and muscle contractions to promote strengthening. The entire musculoskeletal system is isolated and employed to achieve the desired effect. It is also more commonly known as an invigorating form of Yoga for both mind and body. The Pilates focus on core strength can increase flexibility and overall mobility. Improved posture is a remarkable and noticeable change that occurs so naturally with practicing Pilates.

Know your mentor!

Born in Germany in 1880 and then interned in England during World War 1, Joseph Pilates became a nurse and designed exercise apparatus for immobilized patients by attaching springs to hospital beds. This system formed the foundation for his method of body conditioning, which he subsequently brought to New York City and opened the first New York Pilates Studio there in 1926. The rest is history !

What equipment do you need?

Yourself and you will only need to purchase a Pilates mat and those all important stretchy pants. Pilates mats can vary in quality, so be careful not to get a paper thin one or you will be one with the uncomfortable concrete and not get the best out of your class. The more cushion the better,,,, but not more than 2cm’s or you’ll never roll it up. As you become keener on Pilates you may think about another piece of equipment designed to be used during mat exercises,…. the Arc barrel. This is a piece of equipment that helps support the back and shoulders and it is a particularly good tool to use during stretching activities.

How often ?

You don’t need to do Pilates every day to reap the rewards, although the founder of Pilates, Joseph Pilates did recommend doing at least 10 minutes every day. In general, doing Pilates just a few times a week is sufficient to create positive changes. But once you start to see the benefits, you’ll crave a class as often as possible.
