Flute

It is often said that the drums were the frst musical instrument ever invented. Nowadays, almost every band has a drummer, and the drums perform an extremely important function in all forms of music. Although not the most popular of the instruments in the modern set-up (guitars and singing seem to get all the action!!) the Drums are great fun to play and remember, every band needs a drummer!! If you decide to take in the drums then your aim should be to join or form a band since, apart from playing along to music, there are a very limited amount of songs that can be played on their own on the drums!! Another factor which you will need to take into consideration is the logistics of getting your drum kit from place to place. Before you take the plunge and buy a set, ensure that either you, or a member of your band, has a van for transport.

How to play a note on a flute

  • Use a small drinks bottle & blow easily producing a steady sound while keeping the corners of your lips firm and the cheeks flat.
  • Control the direction of a steady stream of air finding the correct angle that produces sound. This exercise transfers to the flute.
  • Take your flute mouthpiece section off the body of the flute.
  • Place the mouthpipe opening on your closed lips so that the hole equally touches your top and bottom lips.
  • Roll the mouthpiece down and away, keeping contact with your lower lip.
  • Do the candle-blowing exercise so that a steady pitch is produced.
  • Insert the mouthpiece section back into the instrument& bring the flute into "playing position."
  • Depress and hold down the three top keys with the left hand plus the thumb key & blow producing a second line G on the treble clef.
  • Use a deep breath & maintain this sound for three seconds.
