The Bagpipes

The Bagpipes belong to the aerophone class of musical instruments, and create their sound when enclosed reeds are fed from a constant reservoir of air in the form of a bag. Though the Scottish Great Highland Bagpipe and Irish uilleann pipes have the greatest international visibility, there are several other other types which originate from different regions throughout Europe, Northern Africa, and the Persian Gulf. The Great Highland Bagpipe is the best known and most easily recognsable version of the Bagpipes, overshadowing the great number and variety of traditional forms of bagpipe. In recent years there has been a resurgence in many types of bagpipes, not least the Irish tradition of uilleann pipes.

The basics of playing The Bagpipes

Learning the Bagpipes

If you just pick up a set of bagpipes and try to play them you’ll be struggling to get any sort of noise out of them. Playing the bagpipes is a complex task with a lot of different things happening at the same time.

Learning to play the Bagpipes requires a measured, systematic approach. The conventional well-proven method begins with a good quality practice chanter, which although an instrument in its’ own right, is a practice tool which helps you to learn how to play the bagpipes properly . The Chanter looks very similar to the typical Recorder that you may have learnt in school, but the sound it makes is quite different. When you have mastered the practice chanter, you are then ready for the actual bagpipes. If you try to bypass the chanter you are almost definitely going to fail in mastering the bagpipes. Make sure that you get a good quality chanter, because you’ve enough on your hands trying to master this tricky skill without having to deal with dodgy equipment!!
