Cricket

Cricket is a bat and ball sport, played on a large oval shaped pitch, by two teams of 11 players. One team bats, and tries to score as many runs as possible while the other team bowls and fields, trying to dismiss the batsmen and thus limit the runs scored by the batting team. When the batting team has used all its remaining batsmen within the available bowls, the roles reverse and it is now the fielding team's turn to bat and try to outscore the opposition.

The batting team will have two batsman on the pitch at any time. One of the batsman receives a bowl and attempts to hit the ball outside the boundary without bouncing (6 runs) or after bouncing (4 runs). The batsman can also hit the ball into the field and score runs by running in alternate with the other batsman between two sets of stumps as many times as possible before the ball is retrieved by the felding team and thrown back to either set of stumps. If the ball arrives back to the stumps and the stumps are not guarded by by the batsman then the fielder knocks the stumps over with the ball and the batsman is run out . The batsman can also be caught out if he hits the ball and it is caught by a fielder without bouncing.

Cricket spread in tandem with the British Empire, and today it is also popular in Australia and New Zealand, India Pakistan and Sri Lanka, South Africa and the West Indies. Due to this large geographical spread, it is officially the second most popular sport in the world after Soccer

Cricket as a pastime

Cricket has a reputation in the UK and Ireland as being a somewhat elitist Sport, but this is somewhat of a generalisation, since its popularity actually permeates across the social classes. It is a very enjoyable pastime, and does not require supreme levels of physical fitness. Cricket on a social level is becoming increasingly popular, as is the emergence of ladies Cricket teams and leagues. When considering taking up the game it should be noted that this is a summer sport only, the winter does not lend itself to the playing of cricket
