The Trumpet
The Trumpet is a leading member of the brass family, and has the highest register of any instrument within that family. The modern trumpet is equipped with 3 valves which are used to produce variations in pitch .The Trumpet is one of the oldest musical instruments, with the earliest examples dating back to 1500 b.c. in ancient Egypt. The origins of the modern Trumpet can also be traced back to early hunting horns and bugles. Although a staple of brass bands, in contemprary music the Trumpet is most extensivley used in Jazz and there have been several famous Jazz Trumpeters such as Louis Armstrog, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis.

Learning the Trumpet
In learning how to play the trumpet, the “embouchure” ie the use of the lips, mouth and jaw is all-important, as is the force and method by which you move air through the instrument. By varying these skills and mastering the valves and the different valve combinations, you will be well on your way to learning this difficult instrument. As with all instruments, practice, practice, practice is all important, as is not trying to master too much too soon. Practice on your own (preferably when everyone is out of the house!!) and pracice using music that you like and which interests you!!
