Careers in P.R.
Public Relations is a very demanding role, the PR executive must be extremely adept at time management and managing priorities. They must also be ready for any situation, and handle intense media or customer pressure at very short notice. This may appeal to some, and the work can vary widely, but the other hard fact to be aware of when considering a career in PR is that the hours can be very long, and that the working day is not as clearly defined as in other professions. Again, this may appeal to some.
- Spin
Another common mis-conception surrounding PR is the idea that public relations Departments are a group of people who spin everything. Spin can mean to turn around a bad situation to the company’s advantage. It is true that part of the purpose of public relations is to show the company in a positive light no matter what. However, in most cases there are certain specialists that a company can turn to for this particular skill.
- Career Path
Competition for jobs in PR is fierce. A talented public relations person has the opportunity to work up from a junior Account Executive to Account Director in around five years. This is not a nine to five job; the hours are long and can be stressful. However, for successful PR workers, the pay is good and the perks may be even better. Excellent verbal and writen skills are a pre-requisite for any career in P.R.
