The Trombone
The trombone belongs to the brass family of musical instruments. The trombone’s main distincive feature is the telescopic slide with which the player varies the length of the tube to change pitches, although the valve trombone also uses valves similar to those on a trumpet. The trombone is an essential part of both the orchestra and the Brass band and is also a very popular instrument in Swing and Jazz bands as well as Salsa and Ska. Because of long-standing association with certain types of music, the sound of a trombone is ideal for marches, fanfares, and solemn processionals, but also any time you want to “ jazz it up”. The mouthpiece of a trombone is larger than that of a trumpet, and it is the mouthpiece which gives it its’ distinctive mellow sound.

Introductory Trombone Lessons
Learning the trombone
As with almost all woodwind and brand instruments, the “embouchure” ( the positioning, firmness and shape of the mouth, lips, and jaw in respect of the mouthpiece ) is all important when learning how to play the Trombone properly . The embouchure should be studied and perfected in order to get the best results. Another important factor to remember when considering the Trombone is that it’s not as easy as it looks!! Many people beieve that the the instrument will provide a musical note at any given given point on the slide. This is not true!! The slide is a very tricky item to master and if not mastered , all you will produce is noise!!
