The Tuba
The Tuba is the largest and lowest pitched member of the brass family of instruments. The Tuba’s sound is produced by vibrating the lips into a large cupped mouthpiece whilst manipuating up to 5 valves. There is usually only one Tiuba in an orchestra, and it can play lower notes than all of the other brass instruments. Although it is the main bass instrument in the orchestra it can sometimes feature as a solo instrument. It is also a mainstay of military marching bands, in fact the Tuba was originally designed to be played whilst marching.

Learning the Tuba
When considering learning the Tuba, you should be aware of the fact that you will be somehat constricted in the style and range of music which the Tuba enables you to play. You also need to be sure that you are the requisite height in order to reach the mouthpiece. Do also consider the logistics of transporting and carrying the Tuba, as it is a large instrument.
In order to be able to grasp learning the Tuba ou need to learn about its different parts and what they do. You won’t get far without grasping this. You will then need to master the proper “embouchure” , which is the formation of mouth and lips in relation to the mouthpiece, and learn the proper breathing techniques needed to achieve the desired sound.
