The Harp
A harp is a stringed instrument which has the plane of its strings positioned perpendicular to the soundboard. The folk harp or Celtic harp is designed for traditional music; it can be played solo or with small groups. It is prominent in Irish, Scottish and other Celtic cultures within traditional or folk music and as a social and political symbol for Ireland. However the Harp and it’s close relation the lyre were prevalent in almost all ancient cultures, so it is not a uniquely Irish or even Celtic instrument.
The Concert Harp is the Harp as we know it and is used extensively throughout the orchestra and has a unique and often dreamlike resonance. The Harp has featured strongly in all music from Baroque to Classical and especially in music for Ballet. In contemporary music, it is used extensively by the likes of Clannad, Enya and Bjork. The Harp also features in the song “Rabbit Heart” by Florence and the Machine and “Telephone” by Lady GaGa

Learning the Harp
If you are considering taking up the Harp the first thing you have to figure out are the logistics of storing and transporting your instrument...
The Harp takes some time to master, and patience and perseverance are required like many instruments. The instrument is played with the fingertips, with force from the hand and arm, and ultimately the upper body. The fingertips are drawn in to meet the palm of the hand, thus releasing the string from whatever pressure was placed upon it by the fingers. The fingers are naturally curved or rounded as they touch the strings, and the thumb is gently curved as the tip rises to the string as an arc from its base. So it’s not just like strumming a guitar!!
