Public Speaking
Public Speaking is the art of communicating to a group of people in a structured manner with the intention to inform, influence, or entertain the audience. A good orator should be able to invoke emotion in their listeners, not just inform them.

How not to do it!!!
There are many roles in business which will require Public Speaking, and to many the mere thought of having to stand and deliver a speech to an audience is enough to absolutely fill them with dread, but with planning and the observation of the following guidelines these fears can be overcome and an effective speech can be delivered:
- Plan the speech!!!
Sounds fairly obvious, but this is something which is often overlooked. Although you may prefer not to read from a script you should put a lot of thought into what you are going to say and equally important, who your audience are. The most important thing is to consider what the purpose of the speech is, and what it is your audience are going to want to hear!!
- Get the tone and occasion right
In researching your audience and what is most likely to appeal to them, you need to also be clear on the theme and tone of the occasion. In a work setting, the tone of the occasion may differ depending on whether the speech is delivered to customers or internally etc. , whether it is concerning an issue of some concern or a celebratory end of year gathering etc. Be sure not to mis-judge the occasion, as to do so may have detrimental effects.
- Don't panic!!!
Hard as it may be, you must try to overcome nerves before you start . Try not to just launch into thespeech , a few informal introductory words at the start can really, really help. Try to control the speed of your speech, a nervous speaker will always speed up too quickly. Try to connect with your audience, make eye contact, you will often be surprised to see a friendly face looking back!!
- Be confident!!
You must give the air of being fully confident in what you arespeaking, (even if your are dying on the inside!!) , otherwise how are you going to convince and connect with your audience? Make sure that you are absolutely clear on what you are going to say. One good tip is to concentrate on making no more than 3 main points in any speech, as it is almost impossible to assimilate and deliver any more.
- Rehearse your timings
Linking back to point no. 1, you need to be absolutely clear on how long you have your audience for and plan the length and tone of the speech accordingly. Don't get caught up in a single point , you may not have time to deliver your full message.
