The French Horn
The French Horn is the lead instrument in the brass section of a orchestra.. The modern French horn has 3 valves, which control circular coils of narrow tubing flaring at the one end to a wide bell, and a funnel-shaped mouthpiece that accounts for the horn's soft, mellow tone. Most modern orchestras include four French Horns.
The French Horn may be played seated or standing. However, the bell of the horn should at all times be pointed away from the body. This is because the tone of the horn is changed by the player putting their hand partialy or fully inside the bell of the horn. If you are considering taking up the French Horn you need to consider the logistics of transporting the instrument from place to place, as it is quite an “awkward” instrument.

Learning the French Horn
- Learning the French Horn is considered a challenging yet rewarding pastime. If you wish to learn the French Horn it is vital that you master the art of the “embouchure” , which is the structure and formation of the lips, jaw and mouth which is needed to produce a note from many brass and woodwind instruments. The correct embouchure for French Horn playing is achieved as follows:
- Ensure that the pressure of the mouthpiece is evenly distributed between the upper and lower lips.
- Keep your lips against your teeth at all times.
- Keep your teeth slightly apart
- Avoid "bunching up" your chin ( especially when hitting a high note!! ) by keeping it in a “U” shape at all times.
- Keep the corners of your mouth firm at all times.
