The Accordian
The accordion is a box-shaped instrumentwhich belongs to the “aerophone” family. The Accordian resembles a keyboard but works with some of the same characteristics of a wind instrument .In America it is commonly referred to as a squeezebox. The Accordian is played by by compressing or expanding a bellows whilst at the same time pressing keys, The instrument can be played on its’ own or as part of a band or orchestra. Melodies are played using the right hand “manual” and bass lines and chords are played on the left hand manual.The accordion is often used in folk music throughout Europe and America. In the U.S. the Accordian, or Squeezebox, is also very prevalant in Cajun music.

The Basics
Learning to play the Accordian
- Sit down on a firm chair
- Place the Accordion on your left knee
- Your right hand operates the keyboard
- Your left hand pumps the bellows
- The white keys are named from A through G, while the black keys are named after the white keys depending on whether they are a half step higher (sharp) or lower (flat) than the adjacent white key.
- There are groups of three black keys, and groups of two black keys.
- There are a total of 12 black and white keys in each repeating group.
- Start by playing the C Major scale. Start on a C near the low side of the keyboard (towards your chin) and play adjacent white keys until you get to the next C an octave higher (towards the bottom of the keyboard - towards your feet).
- The names of the notes in the C Major scale are: C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C
