The need for education cannot be denied. Education does many things, but most importantly, it empowers an individual to think, question and see beyond the obvious. We are all born with a natural tendency to question everything , however as we grow up this tendency dissipates, and we slowly begin to accept everything the way it is, no longer questioning. Education should help in feeding this curiosity and in answering our questions. Education broadens our horizons and gives us a better understanding of the world around us and how things work. It also makes us more conscious of our actions and the implications of those actions, and therefore more likely to make a positive contribution towards society.

The importance of education for a career
Barack Obama stated 'In an economy where knowledge is the most valuable commodity a person and a country have to offer, the best jobs will go to the best educated - whether they live in the United States or India or China'. Although there are many examples where people with very little or no formal education have risen to the top of their chosen career, there is no doubt that a solid education is vital in helping people to achieve succes and greatness in the workplace. Looked at in a different way, a good education allows us to choose careers and jobs which interest us and which we like rather than being restricted to roles which may be repetitive, menial and meaningless.

Adult Education
With the need for people to re-train and re-skill in order to progress their careers, or merely to consolidate their current roles, adult education has become a lot more prevalent in recent years. For many Adult Education is seen as a means to progress within their role or company. Many companies provide educational programmes and assistance for employees which enable and encourage Learning. This practice adds greatly to staff and resource development. For others, Adult Education is seen as an opportunity to develop an outlet outside of the workplace. Many others see Adult Education as a means of “catching up” on opportunities lost the first time around. For example, Adult Literacy classes are now extremely popular as adults who never mastered the art of reading and writing avail of an opportunity to do so in their adult life.
