The Motorcycle Test

The motorcycle driving test is standardised across all test centres to ensure consistency of testing, safety and pass rates. There are certain time constraints around when you first obtain your motorcycle learners permit to your actual test. These are as follows

  • You cannot apply for your driving test within six months of obtaining your learner permit unless you have previously held one within the past five years
  • A motorcycle driving test is compulsory for motorcyclists who have received two 2 year learner permits as a third permit can not be issued.

The motorcycle test is designed to ensure that you have a clear understanding of the rules of the road, that you have the ability to control your motorcycle in a manner that is consistent with these rules and that you use your motorcylce in a way that is both safe and acceptable to other road users.

When it comes to the day of the test make sure you have remembered to do the following

  • To revise the rules of the road
  • To have practiced for a sufficient period of time on different road surfaces in different conditions
  • To bring your motorcycle learner permit with you
  • Display your tax and insurance disks clearly
  • To ensure your safety gear, such as helmet, boots, gloves and weather gear, is in good condition and properly adjusted
  • That your motorcycle is in good condition and roadworthy, don't forget those lights, indicators and tyres!
  • That your motorcycle complies with power output regulations
