Gaelic Football and Hurling
Gaelic Football and Hurling are the two most popular spectator sports in Ireland. They are 2 of the Soprts governed by the Gaelic and Athletic Association (G.A.A.) the Association has a deep importance in Irish society. Gaelic Football and Hurling are played in the majority of Irish schools, and it is the work of the schools, and the Association who do great work of preserving and increasing the popularity of the games, both in Ireland and among the Irish around the world. The G.A.A. also has a strict amateur code which it has managed to preserve. The game is played at its highest level on an inter-county basis, and each summer the All Ireland Championships take place, culminating in the All-Ireland Final at Croke Park.

Great G.A.A. Goals
Rules of the games
Both games are played on rectangular pitches, by 2 teams of 15 players each ,with “H” shaped goals at each end. 1 point is scored for hitting the ball over the bar for a “point” and 3 points are scored for hitting the ball under the bar for a “goal” . In Gaelic football, players can control, carry, pass and shoot with the hands as well as the feet. In hurling, a small leather “sliothar” ball is used, and the ball is hit with a hurley, which is a traditionally made from ash.
Getting involved
Most children will have acess to both Gaelic Football and Hurling through their school, but for those who don’t, there are G.A.A. clubs throughout the land and the world, wherever there are Irish people. Both codes are extremely physical and testing, and an excellent way of getting fit.
