Although is now spoken as a first language only by a small minority of the Irish population, and as a second language by a larger minority, the Irish language is widely considered to be an important part of our island's culture and heritage. Estimates of fully native speakers vary from from 40,000 to 80,000. Irish enjoys constitutional status as the national and first official language of the Republic of Ireland. It is also an official language of the EU . There are parts of Ireland where Irish is still spoken as the native language. These regions are known as Gaeltachts . It is only in Gaeltacht areas where Irish contimues to be the first language of Ireland. Irish classes are compulsary in Irish schools but there are many people who leave school with only a few words. Irish languages for adults are therefore extremely popular as people strive to improve their sense of culture and heritage.

Ireland has the world's largest collection of folklore and proverbs of which the vast majority is only available in Irish.
- Ireland's need to maintain its identity in the EU: Ireland's recent entry into the EU has highlighted Ireland's need to maintain its unique identity through its language. Irish is becoming more and more a part of the Irish national identity as well as gaining increasing popularity with both Irish and non-Irish abroad.
