English is actually a germanic language which has its’ roots in the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of England. English, commonly agreed to be the global lingua franca, is the international language of communications, science, business, aviation, entertainment, radio and diplomacy. A working knowledge of English has become a requirement in a number of fields, occupations and professions such as medicine and computing. Having its roots in Britain, it spread with the British Empire and became the official language of the United States and Canada after these were colonised. The United States growth as a superpower then helped to acelerate the languags growth around the world. At least 1 billion people now speak some level of English.
